In Witnessing the Fragments, Salmah Almansoori approaches painting as a process of reflection, healing, and transformation. Rather than documenting specific locations, the work examines the fragments of places encountered over time and the ways in which these experiences quietly shape personal and collective identity. Materials, visuals, and memories gathered across different environments accumulate and intersect, forming compositions that exist between places rather than belonging to any single one.

The series reflects on landscapes, overlooked objects, and the shifting relationship between people and the environments they inhabit. What emerges is not a fixed record of place, but a layered reconstruction of experience that remains fluid, partial, and continuously unfolding. Through mark-making and the incorporation of spices such as red chili, zaatar, and turmeric, materials connected to different locations become embedded within the surface. Their textures carry traces of place while simultaneously dissolving into abstraction. Watercolor extends this process, allowing forms and emotions to soften, merge, and surface organically.

Each work becomes a site of accumulation where memory, material, and perception converge. Through these fragments, overlaps, and in-between spaces, the series reflects on the search for familiarity within movement, transition, and lived experience.
