Salmah Almansoori Emirati , b. 2001
In this series, Almansoori's work revolves around the recurring motif of doors encountered in abandoned locations. Throughout her explorations, she has encountered a multitude of both open and closed doors. Almansoori tends to avoid entering spaces with locked doors, as these doors symbolize exclusion, protection, secrecy, and imprisonment. In contrast, her explorations are often limited to places with open doors, as these doors signify welcome and foster an environment of discovery and investigation.
The series, presented in a diptych, features Almansoori's use of silkscreen to print two distinct doors – one open and one closed – on found objects retrieved from the same abandoned site. This creative expression encapsulates her interpretation of the symbolism and significance of doors in abandoned spaces, offering a unique perspective on the dichotomy of access and restriction, openness and closure.
