Firetti Contemporary is proud to announce Reverie, the highly anticipated Middle Eastern debut of acclaimed Cuban-American artist Reynier Llanes. Opening on April 13, 2025, the exhibition showcases works from Llanes’ celebrated series, The Poet, where themes of self-reflection, memory, and storytelling unfold in a dreamlike state. The exhibition draws inspiration from the philosophy of "reverie", as articulated by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard in The Poetics of Reverie:"Reverie is not a mind vacuum. It is rather the gift of an hour which knows the plenitude of the soul."Bachelard describes reverie as a state of contemplation beyond time, where imagination and memory merge to reveal hidden truths about the self and the world. Llanes embodies this vision, creating works that act as gateways to introspection, where reality dissolves into poetic reflection. His creative process allows emotions and memories to surface freely, guiding his compositions into realms that feel at once deeply personal and universally resonant. Reverie is not about escaping life’s struggles but about reinterpreting them, offering a space where emotions, memories, and aspirations intertwine. At the heart of Reverie is The Poet, an enigmatic figure observing the fleeting yet profound moments of life—self-discovery, nostalgia, love, and loss. Suspended between memory and imagination, The Poet exists in a state of perpetual contemplation. Through delicate linework and atmospheric compositions, Llanes invites viewers into a space of quiet reflection, where the boundaries between past and present, real and imagined, begin to blur. His ability to balance melancholy with beauty, hardship with hope, creates an intimate yet universally resonant experience. The latest works in The Poet series bridge ancestral echoes with contemporary realities, responding to both timeless human experiences and pressing global events. Llanes presents a poignant piece titled Places dedicated to the wars and conflicts unfolding around the world, capturing the weight of these realities with his signature poetic sensitivity. At the same time, he explores personal struggles, resilience, and transformation, using a fresh visual language to expand The Poet’s narrative.Among the new works is Solar, a luminous composition embracing a brighter palette, symbolizing renewal and the pursuit of beauty amid adversity. A radiant figure emerges from an ocean of gold, dissolving into the surrounding textures. The entire canvas vibrates with warmth, as if The Poet has merged with the sun itself, embodying transcendence. In Stellar, The Poet is suspended in the vastness of the cosmos, gazing into an expanse teeming with celestial fragments. The golden hues of the figure resonate with swirling cosmic dust, evoking humanity’s search for meaning among the stars.Echoes juxtaposes time and presence, depicting a modern woman leaning against an old telephone booth, while The Poet—ghostly and translucent—listens intently from the other side. The contrast between their worlds is palpable, exploring connection, distance, and the silent conversations between past and present.Other works in the exhibition further examine solitude, nostalgia, and transformation. In The Portal, a spectral figure steps through a rainbow cascading into the sea, crossing from one realm into another—dissolving in light and color, embodying the beauty of the unknown.Thoughts places The Poet in deep contemplation, reminiscent of The Thinker, yet rendered in an ethereal, melting translucency. The figure merges with the atmosphere, as though thought itself is eroding the boundaries of the physical world.Another new work, Eve, is set against a Cuban porch, where The Poets appear as ethereal figures caught in an intimate, fleeting moment. The painting captures a space between reality and memory, drawing on Llanes’ personal connection to Cuba. The piece incorporates familiar imagery—weathered facades, warm streetlights, and everyday architecture—grounding his dreamlike storytelling in tangible reality.Beyond personal and cultural narratives, Llanes also engages with contemporary discussions on artificial intelligence, consciousness, and immortality. As technology advances and raises questions about preserving human memory beyond physical existence, The Poet serves as a metaphor for the soul—an eternal essence that continues to accumulate knowledge and experience, beyond time and space. Just as reverie allows the mind to drift freely across past, present, and imagined futures, The Poet becomes a keeper of collective memory and the evolving human experience. -
