A Man Behind the Matchstickmen (And More).

Interview With Wolfgang Stiller
ALEXANDRA MANSILLA, THE SANDY TIMES , May 28, 2024
Wolfgang Stiller reflected on the evolution of his artistic practice through themes of transformation, fragility, absurdity, and the human condition. Best known for his Matchstickmen sculptures — oversized burnt matchstick figures combining dark humor with existential reflection — Stiller discussed how his work often emerges from experimentation, intuition, and the reuse of abandoned materials from earlier projects.

The interview explored the tension in his work between playfulness and discomfort, where familiar objects become uncanny symbols of destruction, vulnerability, and survival. His sculptures frequently blur the boundaries between sculpture, installation, and storytelling, transforming ordinary materials into emotionally charged forms that reflect on identity, mortality, and collective behavior.

Throughout the conversation, Stiller emphasized the importance of curiosity, spontaneity, and allowing materials themselves to guide the creative process. His practice ultimately positions art as a space where humor and darkness coexist, revealing deeper reflections on humanity, imperfection, and the strange poetry embedded within everyday life.
