Firetti Contemporary watches Syrian artist Besher Koushaji rework despair into hope

MUHAMMAD YUSUF, GULF TODAY , October 18, 2025
Besher Koushaji’s work was presented as an exploration of hope emerging from despair, using portraiture and expressive figuration to reflect on resilience, endurance, and the emotional aftermath of conflict. Through layered surfaces, muted palettes, and psychologically charged compositions, Koushaji examined the fragility of the human condition while emphasizing the persistence of dignity and inner strength.

His paintings often depict solitary figures suspended between vulnerability and resistance, embodying themes of displacement, survival, memory, and emotional reconstruction. Rather than illustrating conflict directly, his works focus on the psychological traces left behind, transforming pain and uncertainty into quiet moments of introspection and humanity.

Presented at Firetti Contemporary, the exhibition highlighted Koushaji’s ability to balance emotional intensity with tenderness, positioning his practice within broader conversations around identity, collective trauma, and the role of art as a space for healing, reflection, and hope.
