“Boxing is the metaphor for a life of excellence, we all face our obstacles and we must overcome them. When we fall to the ground we must stand up again, we have our breaks but in the end we are forced to finish the fight. Each of us is the boxer of our experiences”
After 10 years of training in the professional boxing ring, Hassan was disqualified after being diagnosed with diabetes. It was at this point that Hassan turned to art as an outlet and channel for artistic expression.
"I'm not punching to destroy, I'm creating".
Hassan’s series of paintings Breaking Through combines painting and performance in his unique dynamic technique, inspired by his boxing career. This technique involves dipping his boxing gloves into paint and punching onto a large canvas. The series Injections refers to his daily shots of insulin from being diabetic. The paintings are of single dots of colour with streams of paint descending from the centre.
Hassan finds inspiration and insight from the works of renowned graffiti pioneers such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jackson Pollock, where the use of vivid colours schemes and stylistic symbols through spray paint are prominent.
